
Both the Nation Ford and Fort Mill boys’ golf teams qualified for the 5A Division II state golf championship next week.
Nation Ford finished third with a 292, one shot out of second place. Fort Mill finished seventh with a 302. The top eight teams finishing moved on to the two-day, 36-hole state championship at The Hackler course on the campus of Coastal Carolina University.
The 18-hole Upper State tournament on Monday, May 4 was at The Fort Club in Ninety-Six, S.C.
Nation Ford was led by a pair of 72s from both Oliver LaPointe and James Wachtel, tying them for eighth. Carter Smith shot a 73 and Connor Mills finished with a 75.
Fort Mill was led by a 73 from Baker Tolentino. He was followed with a 75 from Noah Jones and a 76 from Tyson Shouse. Nick Harper finished with a 78 for the Jackets to wrap up their scoring.
Catawba Ridge finished 11th overall with a 320. They were led by Niam Sethi with a 74 to qualify him for the state championship as an individual. Carter Mitten and Roman Vasicko both shot an 81, while Muller Otto finished the scoring for the Copperheads with an 84.

The Fort Mill softball team shutout Gaffney 8-0 to open the 5A Division 2 playoffs. Brooke Rosario went 3-4 with two home runs and two RBI and Haley Rogers went 1-4 with a home run and three RBI. Rogers got the win going four and a third innings striking out seven in the process, while allow two hits and not allowing a walk. Fort Mill improved to 14-12 overall and plays at Woodmont on Wednesday, May 6.
The Nation Ford softball team beat Greenwood 12-2 to open the 5A Division II playoffs and improve to 17-8 overall on the year. Jackie Knol went 2-4 with four RBI. Tori Baldino went 2-2 with two RBI. Kailey Alston got the win allowing two runs on two hits, while striking out four without allowing a walk. Nation Ford plays at TL Hanna on May 6.
The Fort Mill baseball team fell to Greenville 6-3 in eight innings to open the 5A Division II playoffs. The loss dropped them to 13-14 on the season. Cooper Diehl and JT Leonhardt each had two hits for the Jackets. Fort Mill’s will play game two of their series against Greenville on Tuesday, May 5 in Greenville.
