In another large signing class, Fort Mill High had nine athletes commit to play college athletics Thursday.

Of those signing there were three lacrosse players, two volleyball players, two golfers, a baseball player and a soccer player.

“We are exceptionally proud of them,” said Fort Mill High principal Gales Scroggs. “They are going to represent us and take a part of the Yellow Jacket universe with them.”

The signing class wasn’t the biggest Fort Mill has ever had, but athletic director Dwayne Hartsoe said the day is special even if the backdrop of the coronavirus had athletes socially distanced during the signing.

“It is always an exciting day for us,” he said. “We have a great culture here at the school.”

The three lacrosse players were Mason Kenworthy, Peyton Farley and MacLean Reilly. Kenworthy will be going to Coker University. He has been on the Fort Mill varsity lacrosse team for four years and was part of the 2019 state championship team.

Farley will be heading to Wingate University and is a team captain, a four-year varsity starter and a member of the 2019 state championship team as well. He has led the team in takeaways, playing both defense and long stick middle positions.

Reilly, also a member of the 2019 state title team, is a three-year starter on varsity with several multi-goal games for Fort Mill. He will be taking his talents to Greenwood to play at Lander University. He started playing for Fort Mill in the eighth grade and scored his first goal as a freshman in the playoffs against Riverside.

The two volleyball players are Lauren Ambrose and Allyson Hall. Ambrose is going to Appalachian State University and has played on the varsity the past three years. She has been an All-Region player for three years in a row and in her sophomore year she had 292 kills and averaged 3.2 kills per set. She has a 4.6 GPA and is in the top 10 % of her class.

Hall will be going to USC-Lancaster and is a two-year letter winner on the varsity team. In addition to volleyball, she has bene a four-year varsity letter winner in softball and was named to the All-Region team.

The two golfers are Griffin Tarver and Bryce Wittmer. Tarver will be heading to Charleston Southern University and is a four-time letterman. He is a two-time All-Region golfer and has twice been an All-Area golfer. He is currently the fifth ranked golfer in the state and the reigning Carolinas Junior PGA Champion. He was also a member of the state Match Play team as well as the Carolinas Match Play team.

Wittmer is a five-year varsity member and will be going to Lander University to play. He won 2018 Shot of the Year award and was a top player for the team that won the Harold Varner Invitational tournament. He is a member of the S.C. Junior Golf Association and a top 25 finisher in the state Junior Championship. Wittmer also won the 2018 Junior Championship at the Tega Cay Golf Club.

Brayden Kurtz is the lone baseball player and will be going to George Washington University. Kurtz is a three-year pitcher for Fort Mill. He has a 4-0 record in 26.1 innings pitched and has struck out 27 during that time, with a 3.76 ERA.

The only soccer player to sign was Kevin Wright, who will be playing at Brevard College. He is a three-year starter for Fort Mill and has logged more field time per game than anyone else on the Jackets roster during that time. He has played club soccer for various organizations, most recently at the Charlotte Independent Soccer Club.
